Question: Do I need insect repellant?

Answer: At Saladero we have very few mosquitoes , but we are in the rain forest and we do have bugs (some are really cool too!). The ones that are not so cool occasionally bite in the evenings but its not really very often. If you have access to Skin So Soft from Avon, it has citronella in it and is quite effective with most bugs. Just a reminder all of the cabins are screened.

Question: Is crime a problem there?

Answer: Saladero is very safe, the surrounding properties are owned by families of our workers and theft in this area is very rare. Having said that all beaches in Costa Rica are public, our Lodge is very close to the beach and we suggest that personal items such as cameras etc should not be left out in public areas.
Other areas you may travel through in Costa Rica you should research ahead of time but we do recommend that you always
take every precaution to safeguard your belongings.

Question: Can we bring our children?

Answer: We welcome children 7 and up. We regret that we are unable to accommodate younger children.

Question: Are children charged the same as adults to stay at Saladero?

Answer: We are happy to offer a reduction in cost of half price for children aged 7 through 11 for accommodation and food. Please be prepared to show the passports of your children in order to receive the discount when you arrive.

Question: How do we pay for the deposit and booking?

Answer: We require a 50% deposit to hold your booking. We accept PayPal, POP Money and checks drawn on U.S. banks which can be sent to us at our Florida address (we will provide account information to you when you book). You can also send international wires for your deposit. We do not have phone landlines here and we are not able to personally accept credit cards. We do have an arrangement with our accountant to accept credit card payments on our behalf, the fee she charges to you for this service is $25 plus 6% of the amount charged.
When you check out please settle your remaining balance at that time. We will gladly accept cash but regret that we are unable to accept traveler’s checks as they take 90 days or more to clear in Costa Rica.

Question: We are travelling on a budget and would prefer to keep our costs down by preparing our own food, is refrigeration available for us to store our food and drinks?

Answer: Saladero Lodge offers a full service experience, we regret that we are unable to offer self catering accommodation and we are unable to provide kitchen facilities to our guests. We are also totally solar and battery powered and do not have the refrigeration space to store personal food and drinks for our guests. We are happy to provide self catering travelers with some information on houses to rent in the region.

Question: Are there cooking facilities for campers?

Answer: Campers do have a cooking hearth for preparing meals and we can provide dry wood and some ice daily for coolers.

Question: Should we bring snacks?

Answer: Although we make sure you have plenty of good food to eat during mealtimes and afternoon chips/salsas(please see our Sample Menu tab), we are remote and there are no shops near here so you may want to pack the chocolate and nuts in ziplock bags for midnight munchies and the between meal snacks!

Question: We are driving from Drake Bay, where can we be picked up for the transfer to Saladero? Is it Pto Jimenez or is there someplace closer?

Answer: We can pick you up and drop you off at Playa Blanca which is 30 minutes closer to Drake Bay and will save you time. The bar on the beach at Playa Blanca will look after your car for a small daily fee, just let us know when you book with us and we will make arrangements to see you there.

Question: What time can I check in?

Answer: Please arrange your trip to be picked up in Golfito or Puerto Jimenez no later than 12 noon for your journey to Saladero Lodge by boat. In the afternoons the water can be rough so please let us know if you are arriving in the afternoon and we will suggest overnight accommodation for you. The earlier you get here the sooner you can begin to enjoy our corner of paradise!

Question: What time is checkout time?

Answer: Please be checked out and ready for your return boat ride back to Golfito or Pto Jimenez by 10 am.

Question: Is internet available for guests to use?

Answer: No. We do not have internet or phones available for guests. We do have a cell phone which is used for business or emergency purposes and we can send a brief email to relatives/friends notifying them of your safe arrival amidst the leaping dolphins.

Question: Can I use a hair dryer?

Answer: No. We are off the grid and hair dryers use too much electricity.

Question: What do you recommend we should bring and is there anything else we should know to make the most of our trip?

Answer: When you make your booking with us we will send you an information list (flashlights, dry bags, water shoes etc). We update the list regularly as our guests bring clever ideas to our attention that we can’t wait to share.
